Experience the magic and beauty of Otavalo and its people whose handicrafts are known throughout the world. Here you get to see how they are made and can have first pick! In the shadow of the great Andes Mountains, this natural sets us truly astounding.
Departure at 8:00 am from your hotel. Our first stop is Calderón, a small town famous for its bread dough figurines. See how skilled artisans make this traditional handcraft and try yourself out at molding your own piece of art! We continue to San Pablo del Lago and take a secondary cobblestone road that brings you closer to the lifestyles of the people living on the foothills of sacred Mount Imbabura.
We arrive to Otavalo and visit its markets, starting with fruits and vegetables, where you can delight your senses with the diverse local produce. The market takes up an entire square and is full of color and bargains hard to pass up - a paradise for both for photographers and shopping enthusiasts.
We will have lunch at a colonial hacienda, followed by a visit to the town of Peguche. Here we visit a workshop where woven garments are made by the ancient technique called “back-strap.” We will also visit a family that is into music in more ways than one.
We take another road back to Quito, via Cayambe, and make a quick stop at an equator marker and solar clock, where we will get a more scientific explanation on the importance of living at latitude zero and how and why our indigenous cultures studied the stars.
