If you need to cancel, please do so at least 24 hours before your scheduled departure and we will refund 50%.  We cannot refund cancellations with shorter notice.

Quilotoa Lake 1 Day


Duration: 13 hour(s) - Location: Lake Quilotoa

This full day cultural tour begins with a visit to a local indigenous market at Saquilisili or a historic church in Pujili. (On Thursday, we visit the famous local market of Saquisilí. On other days, when the market is closed, we instead visit the first missionary church in Ecuador, located in Pujili.)

The drive to Laguna Quilotoa provides a fantastic chance to see the real Ecuador. You will enjoy a beautiful view of the Andean mountains, passing the ancient canyon of Zimbahua and many indigenous towns and farmlands. Before lunch, we visit a local aboriginal home where you have the opportunity to interact with the inhabitants and maybe learn some Quichua.

The tour includes a steep hike down into the Laguna Quilotoa; a sparkling emerald lake inside the extinct volcano crater. The return hike takes 1 hour, or there is an option of renting a mule for $5.

  • 8:30 AM - Arrive at Papagayo Hacienda to have breakfast and pickup other clients
  • 9:30 AM - Explore Saquisili/Pujili (Thursday/Sunday)
  • 10:30 AM - Depart for Laguna Quilotoa
  • 1:30 PM - Lunch, begin descent to the lagoon
  • 3:00PM - Explore the lagoon (kayaking optional)
  • 3:30 PM - Return ascent to crater rim
  • 4:30 PM - Begin drive back to Papagayo Hacienda
  • 6:30 PM - Arrive at the hacienda and enjoy hot tea/coffee and chocolate cake
  • 7:00 PM - Depart for Quito
  • 8:00 PM - Hotel arrival

The weather in the area of Laguna Quilotoa is unpredictable so please bring warm and waterproof clothing. It is important that you are well prepared for 3,800 meters, so we recommend acclimatizing for at least one day around at an altitude of approximately 3,000 meters.

It is recommended that you have current travel insurance. Please inform us of any medical conditions you have.
